UPSC Civil Services Examination Pattern

Preliminary Examination

Objective type screening test to select candidates for Mains examination.

Paper I: General Studies (200 marks, 2 hours)
Paper II: CSAT (200 marks, 2 hours, qualifying)
Total Questions: 100 (Paper I), 80 (Paper II)
Marking: +2 for correct, -0.67 for wrong (Paper I)
Cut-off: 33% in Paper II to qualify
Purpose: Screening for Mains (approx 12-13 times vacancies)

Main Examination

Written examination testing in-depth knowledge and analytical abilities.

Paper I: Essay (250 marks)
Paper II-V: General Studies I-IV (250 marks each)
Paper VI-VII: Optional Papers (250 marks each)
Total Marks: 1750 marks
Duration: 3 hours per paper
Qualifying: Indian Language & English (300 marks each)

Personality Test (Interview)

Final stage testing overall personality and suitability for civil services.

Marks: 275 marks
Duration: 30-40 minutes
Board: 5 members including UPSC chairman
Focus: Personality, leadership, communication
Final Merit: Mains (1750) + Interview (275) = 2025
Selection: Based on final merit list
